Still time to bag a bank holiday bargain

Now that the ash cloud has lifted and it looks like rain is on the way, this weekend is a great opportunity to get away from it all and head abroad.  Plenty of Brits are making the most of the bank holiday and half term break next week to jet off into the sun. Heathrow airport is expecting its busiest Whitsun bank holiday for 10 years with an estimated 800,000 passengers passing through its gates and UK airports as a whole are gearing up for an anticipated 2 million passengers.

The Grimsvötn volcano in Iceland is still active but is now releasing steam and smoke into the air instead of the ash particles that grounded flights across Europe earlier in the week. As a result, Eurocontrol, the continent’s air traffic control body, has announced that it is expecting a trouble-free weekend. And the unusually balmy spring weather, which meant we enjoyed one of the warmest Easter breaks on record, has deserted us. Most of the UK won’t see the temperature rise above 16c (61f) until the middle of next week and plenty of cloud and showers are forecast between now and then.

Benidorm has proved hugely popular

Thousands of Travel Republic customers are amongst those heading off this weekend. Spain has proved to be very popular, with Alicante airport, the gateway to Benidorm and the Costa Blanca, the most popular flight destination. Number two on our list is Palma in Majorca, followed by Dalaman in Turkey. Tenerife South, Malaga (the gateway to the Costa del Sol) and Ibiza take the fourth, fifth and sixth places on the list, followed by Faro, Fuerteventura and Mahon in Menorca.

So too has Majorca

The AA is predicting that 15 million cars will take to the roads this weekend with traffic peaking on Friday afternoon.  If you have booked a trip abroad make sure you leave plenty of time to get to the airport!

If, however, you’re toying with the idea of booking something very last minute then there are some cracking deals to be had on the website. A few examples are given below
